The pattern is not abstract. It is visible in the region’s carefully curated calendar of business, finance, and sporting events, which has collapsed since late February:

• Global Forums: The World Economic Forum in Jeddah was rescheduled indefinitely. Abu Dhabi Business Week was postponed.

• Major Conferences: The Arabian Travel Market in Dubai was moved from May to August. A major crypto conference in Dubai was deferred by a full year to April 2027.

• Sporting Events: The Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Formula 1 Grands Prix were cancelled. The “Finalissima” football match between Spain and Argentina in Doha was suspended.

• Cultural Events: Art Dubai proceeded in an “adapted format” after its original plans were disrupted.

• Energy Forums: The CEOs of Saudi Aramco and ADNOC both skipped the CERAWeek conference in Houston to remain in the region.

Two structural factors explain this freeze:

1. The Insurance Gap. War is now a “blanket exclusion” in travel and event insurance for the Gulf region. As one industry expert noted, “The insurance gap is not a sentiment problem. It is a balance-sheet constraint that operates independently of whether the security situation improves.” Without insurance, no event can proceed.

2. The Decoupling of Gulf Capital. Gulf sovereign wealth funds, projected to manage $7.3 trillion by 2030, are actively reorienting their strategies. European general partners are building dedicated co-investment vehicles to attract this capital, which is seeking stability outside the immediate conflict zone. The capital that once flowed to U.S.-centric events is finding other pathways.

The message for global executives is clear: the old map of global capital flows is being redrawn, and the reliability of the Gulf as a convening hub is no longer a given.

In 2026, a pattern emerged. The U.S. president would announce a breakthrough — an ally agreeing, a deal close, a war nearly over. Within hours, sometimes minutes, the other side would say: that never happened.

This is the White House Template. Claim victory. Declare progress. Hope no one checks.

But people are checking.

Act I: Spain (March 9–12)

The U.S. needed bases to strike Iran. Spain refused.

“These bases will not be used for anything not in accordance with the UN Charter.”

Trump threatened to cut off all trade. The White House announced Spain had agreed to cooperate. Spain’s foreign minister called it “completely untrue.”

The template was set: claim an ally’s support; let the ally clean up in private.

Act II: Iran (March 18–25)

Trump announced “productive talks.” A deal was close. Iran wanted peace.

“We do not intend to negotiate,” said Iran’s foreign minister.

“Fake news,” said the parliament speaker.

A University of Tehran professor explained:

“Every week, when markets open, Trump makes these statements to drive down oil prices.”

The template was not about diplomacy. It was about markets.

Act III: Saudi Arabia (March 24)

Trump said Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was encouraging him to continue the war.

“He is a warrior. He is fighting with us.”

Within minutes, Saudi Arabia issued a formal denial:

“The claim is completely false and misleading.”

The template now had a five-minute turnaround.

Act IV: Qatar (March 21–26)

Qatar’s Emir warned Trump of “serious consequences.”

Then its Minister of Education delivered a public rebuke:

“STOP using us as an excuse for your sick destructive agendas. STOP your baseless claims that you want to liberate us. No one needs you to liberate them, we just need you to leave us alone.”

“It’s not our fault that you failed in school and received your education from Hollywood movies — the world is not a movie.”

The template had evolved: allies were no longer just denying. They were shouting.

Act V: The Final Act — Trump at FII (March 27)

At the FII Miami summit, the president took the stage.

Semafor captured the surface this week:

“Wall Street’s moneymen still want to sit at the intersection of Middle East petrodollars and western capitalism. For now, though, they’d just rather do it from Miami.”

But look closer at the intersection.

The speaker list at FII Miami included no major Wall Street CEOs. No European leaders. No U.S. cabinet officials. The people who should have been in the room stayed home.

Why?

Because the intersection is on fire. Gulf capital is walking — $322 billion in Treasury sales in early 2026 alone. Allies publicly denied the White House’s claims in real time — Spain, Iran, Saudi, Qatar — each within hours, sometimes minutes.

Then Trump took the stage — and confirmed exactly why they stayed away.

The first word out of his mouth was: “There are many rich people in this room – left, right and center, even all the way to the back.”

He was acknowledging the transaction. FII had pivoted to Miami to sell access to the high-net-worth crowd — the finance executives who had relocated there, the investors who filled the seats.

Then he boasted about a poll showing 100% approval among MAGA voters — a statistic CNN’s Harry Enten immediately qualified as 100% of the 30% of Americans who identify as MAGA supporters. He was sending a signal to the investors in the room: I am unshakable. Bet on me.

Then he told the room about a private conversation he had with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman:

“He said, ‘A year ago you were a dead country. Now you are the hottest country anywhere in the world.’”

Then came the line that would travel:

“He didn’t think this was going to happen. He didn’t think he would be kissing my ass. He really didn’t. He thought I would be just another American president that was a loser, where the country was going downhill. But now he has to be nice to me. You tell him: he’d better be nice to me. He’s got to be.”

Then, moments later, he called the Crown Prince a “fantastic man” and a “warrior fighting with us.” The ally who hosted the summit was praised, humiliated, and praised again — all in the same speech.

Then, as if to remind a room full of investors what kind of stage this really was, he added:

“You can ask me anything you want. You can talk sex. Whatever the hell you want.”

The room didn’t happen by accident. It was engineered years in advance — and the engineering is documented.

In October 2022, FII Institute announced an exclusive membership program, effective January 2023, under which all its summits would only be accessible to paying members at $15,000 per year (FII Institute membership page).

That same month, former Miami Mayor Francis Suarez — working as a private attorney at the firm representing Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund — extended a personal invitation to bring FII Priority to Miami for the first time. He helped open a Saudi investment office in the city. He positioned Miami as the gateway for Gulf sovereign wealth into the Americas. He left office in December 2025. Within weeks, he was named president of a Gulf-backed private equity firm.

Before the current summit opened, the House of Saud noted that the Faena Hotel — the most expensive venue on Miami Beach — signaled a target audience of:

“ultra-high-net-worth attendees and institutional investors rather than retail audiences.”

I recall that before FII was even formed, we were on PIF’s curated list — as innovators, nation builders, and policy advisors. That was the founding mission that we publicly championed. But when they introduced their membership fees in Miami in 2024, and engaged with many of the participants, I already read the room.

The $15,000 membership fee was the filter — despite that the members are people who may not move institutional capital. And even paying it guaranteed nothing: FII’s own terms reserve the right to refuse any member entry, with fees non-cancellable, non-refundable, and non-transferable (FII Institute membership terms).

Past Miami editions drew 1,200 to 1,500. This year: 1,900. They invited me — and then cancelled my participation, citing "space limitations", even after I informed them of my flight and hotel booking, and even, after learning that some of my colleagues were paying members — I graciously accepted, thinking it might be due to the war. Only to learn later that the overcapacity of 1,900 people in the room was curated to accommodate Miami's transactional new money instead.

Epilogue

The summit ended. No alliance was restored. The only headline was the performance.

They built the stage. They invited the actor. They paid for the production.

Now the deeper question: what did the Gulf actually need from this room?

Not capital. The PIF manages nearly $1 trillion in assets. What it needs — urgently — is credibility. Saudi Arabia’s target is to attract $100 billion a year in foreign investment by 2030. According to AGBI, actual net inflows in the first nine months of 2025 were just $19 billion. PIF cash reserves had fallen to their lowest level since 2020, forcing cuts of up to 60 percent across project budgets, per The Saudi Times. One analyst close to the process told AGBI:

“This is all going to come down to perception and how the market reads it.”

Perception. Not fundamentals

This is why the deals showcased at FII Miami — HUMAIN, Saudi Eksab, the Patel Family Office / AHQ hospitality platform — were chosen carefully. These are not independent companies seeking outside capital on their merits. They are Saudi-linked vehicles.

When a Miami investor buys in, it creates the appearance that private capital is independently choosing Saudi opportunities.

That appearance is the product

As one analyst documented, the Gulf’s investment strategy has always been as much about projecting influence as generating returns — soft power that no lobbying firm could manufacture at any price.

The Miami investors in that room — many of them asset managers attending as individuals — are not buyers of an opportunity. They are the proof of concept: evidence that the room works, not that the deals will follow.

In the end, that question belongs to the investors — and the answer depends entirely on whether they ask it before or after they sign.

And the former mayor?

He was never simply an ambassador for Miami. He was the advance man for a market entry that was always going to reward him once his public role was done. He delivered the room. The room delivered him his next career.

Meanwhile, Miami just elected Eileen Higgins — a Democrat who rejected Trump’s endorsed candidate by 20 points and promised to clean up the city’s ethics.

Reading the post-summit FII report confirmed it.

The Wall Street heavyweights announced before the summit were nowhere in the official record. Trump received a full chapter — but sanitised beyond recognition. The lines that travelled around the world did not appear.

The room was curated for perception, not presence.

And then something telling happened.

Their own post-summit report quietly pivoted back to innovators, policymakers, changemakers — the language of their founding mission. Africa gets a chapter. Sierra Leone’s president gets quoted. Latin America development language returns. The investor-heavy framing quietly disappears.

That pivot is not a coincidence. It’s institutional course correction. They saw how the room looked from outside — and they didn’t like the reflection.

The circuit was always burning.

The pattern is complete. The alliance is still burning.

The capital is walking. But maybe the lesson is this: when you lend your stage to someone else’s story, you don’t control how it ends.

Miami voted for competence. FII curated for cash. Higgins won. Suarez profited. Trump humiliated.

I am not a war historian. I don’t pretend to know the classified briefings, the naval strategies, or the calculations made in the Pentagon’s war rooms.

What I do know is law. And morality. And ethics. And politics.

I can see a story coming from fifty feet away when it’s about to break. I can smell when the official version doesn’t match the evidence. I can spot when power is dressing up revenge as victory.

This is one of those stories.

An Iranian warship, returning from a ceremonial exercise the United States attended, was torpedoed in international waters. No warning. No threat. No rescue.

Eighty-seven bodies recovered. Dozens still missing. A neutral country—Sri Lanka—pulled survivors from the water. The submarine that fired simply left.

The Pentagon called it a “quiet death.” They called it victory.

I call it something else.

Here’s why.

I. The Ship That Never Had a Chance

The IRIS Dena was a Moudge-class frigate, part of the Iranian navy. In late February 2026, it sailed to India to participate in MILAN 2026—a massive multinational naval exercise hosted by the Indian Navy. The name “MILAN” means “meeting” or “convergence.” It’s supposed to be about friendship, cooperation, and trust between navies.

The United States was there. An American P-8A Poseidon—the Navy’s most advanced surveillance aircraft—flew the entire exercise alongside the Dena. American pilots watched Iranian sailors march in parades. They tracked the ship’s movements. They knew exactly where it was, what it was doing, and where it was going.

When the exercise ended, the Dena began its journey home. It sailed southwest, alone, through international waters off the coast of Sri Lanka. It was not in a combat zone. It was not threatening any vessel. It was simply heading back to Iran.

The P-8A kept watching.

Then, on March 4, an American submarine fired an MK-48 torpedo. The Dena sank in minutes. It was the first time the U.S. Navy had sunk an enemy warship with a torpedo since World War II.

The Pentagon was proud. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth called it a “quiet death.” General Caine counted it on a scoreboard: “We’ve destroyed 20+ Iranian vessels.” The message was clear: this was victory.

II. What Victory Looked Like From the Water

When the ship went down, 180 Iranian sailors were suddenly in the Indian Ocean. Some were wounded. Some were dying. Some were already dead.

The submarine that fired the torpedo did not surface. It did not stay to help. It did not call for anyone else to help. It simply left.

Here is what international law says about moments like this.

The Geneva Convention for the Amelioration of the Condition of Wounded, Sick and Shipwrecked Members of Armed Forces at Sea—which the United States ratified in 1955—states in Article 18:

“After each engagement, Parties to the conflict shall, without delay, take all possible measures to search for and collect the shipwrecked, wounded and sick… to search for the dead and prevent their being despoiled.”

It does not say “if convenient.” It does not say “if safe.” It says “all possible measures.”

Sri Lanka, a neutral country with no stake in this war, understood this. They dispatched naval vessels and an aircraft. They pulled 32 sailors from the water. They recovered 87 bodies. They provided medical care. They did what the law requires—what basic humanity requires.

The United States, which sank the ship, did nothing.

III. The Question No One Is Asking

In 2025, a civilian flotilla carrying medical aid and baby formula to Gaza was bombed by a drone off Malta. UN experts called it a violation of international law. Israel claimed it was a security threat.

In 2026, an Iranian warship returning from a ceremonial exercise—unarmed, alone, tracked by US surveillance—was torpedoed in international waters. The US called it victory.

One ship carried food to starving children. The other carried sailors home from a parade.

The US and Israel treated the food ship as a threat. They treated the warship as a target.

Ask yourself: if the standard is “any vessel flying an enemy flag is fair game,” why was the flotilla attacked?

And if the standard is “humanitarian vessels must be protected,” why was the Dena not spared?

The answer has nothing to do with international law. It has everything to do with whose flag they flew.

IV. The Lesson of the Laconia

This is not the first time the world has faced this question.

In 1942, a German submarine sank the British troopship Laconia off the coast of Africa. The German commander, Kapitänleutnant Werner Hartenstein, did something unexpected. He surfaced his U-boat and began rescuing survivors. He strung up Red Cross flags and broadcast an open radio message asking for help.

An American bomber, flying from a secret base on Ascension Island, attacked the U-boat anyway. The bombs struck near the sub, forcing Hartenstein to dive. Survivors still in the water were left behind.

After the war, Admiral Karl Dönitz, Germany’s top submarine commander, was put on trial at Nuremberg. One of the charges against him was that he issued the “Laconia Order”—a directive that forbade German U-boats from rescuing survivors.

Then something remarkable happened. Admiral Chester Nimitz, the Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, testified under oath. He stated that American submarines in the Pacific operated under the same policy. They did not rescue Japanese survivors because it would endanger their boats.

Dönitz was convicted on that charge. But the tribunal did not punish him for it. The reason? The Americans had done the same thing.

The message was clear: if everyone does it, no one is guilty.

For eighty years, that was the precedent. The U.S. had testified that rescue was optional. But they never actually acted on it. Not against a ship. Not against sailors in the water.

Until now.

V. Why This Ship? Why at This Moment?

The P-8A had been watching the Dena for days. The US knew exactly where it was, where it was going, and that it was alone.

There was no military necessity to strike that night. The ship was 2,000 miles from the nearest combat zone, heading home from a party the US had attended.

But the Pentagon needed a win. They’d been at war for days. They needed to show they could reach anywhere, anytime, against anything that flew an Iranian flag.

So they chose a ship that couldn’t fight back. They fired without warning. And when the water filled with drowning men, they left.

Sri Lanka came. The United States did not.

That’s not strategy. That’s a message. And the message is: we can do whatever we want, and we will call it victory.

VI. The Lesson of 2026

Pete Hegseth has been explicit about his view of the world. He has called the “rules-based international order” a myth. He has said that great powers do not ask permission—they act. The only law, in his words, is victory.

Now we know what that looks like.

Victory looks like a ship at the bottom of the ocean.

Victory looks like 32 sailors rescued by a country not at war.

Victory looks like 87 bodies recovered, and dozens more still missing, while the submarine that killed them sails home without looking back.

The Laconia Order was a warning. For eighty years, it sat in the history books as a reminder of what happens when war strips away humanity.

In 2026, it became a template.

The U.S. helped create the rule that rescue is optional. They testified to it at Nuremberg. They embedded it in the precedent that let Dönitz walk.

Now, for the first time, they have acted on it.

And they called it victory.

VII. The Question That Remains

The ship was a warship. Under the strict letter of the law, it was a legitimate target. That much is true.

But the law was never meant to stop at the moment of the strike. It was meant to govern what happens after.

The sailors in the water were no longer combatants. They were shipwrecked. And the law is clear: when people are drowning, you try to save them.

It arrives as a result—a final tally that defies every lever of the old machine. Zohran Mamdani’s landslide victory for New York City mayor was not merely an upset. It was a live-fire exercise in counter-playbook politics, a masterclass in systematically dismantling an entrenched political operating system.

The old OS ran on predictable code: institutional endorsements, established donor networks, and brand-name recognition. It was a closed-loop system where power validated itself.

Mamdani’s coalition executed a flawless fork. They didn’t try to out-muscle the old machine on its own terms; they rewired the entire circuit board.

His “rare talent for listening” was the strategic scalpel. It wasn’t a soft skill—it was the core function that identified the old system’s faults and built the new network in real-time.

They neutralized the financial advantage with a distributed, small-donor network. They rendered top-down endorsements irrelevant by building authentic, hyper-local credibility. They replaced broadcast-era name ID with a targeted, relational organizing model.

The Architect’s Question: Who Writes the Rules of the New OS?

This is the critical pivot. This lens is not about celebrating a victor; it’s about auditing the new power structure.

1. The Obvious Beneficiary: Mamdani and the progressive left.

2. The Sovereign Citizen: The ultimate “winner” should be the voter.

3. The Structural Beneficiaries: The Architects of the New Playbook.
   This victory validates a new blueprint for winning power.

   • The Digital Campaign Strategists: Their approach is now the de facto standard.

   • The Governance Reformers: His success is a powerful, real-world advertisement for coalition-building reforms.

In short: The win signals a shift in the market for power. A new “operating system” has been installed, and its developers have just seen their stock soar.

The Mechanics of the Fork: A Blueprint for Disruption

The “fork” is more than a metaphor; it’s a technical process with a precise political analogue. In open-source software, a fork happens when developers copy a project’s source code and start independently developing it, creating a new, competing version. Mamdani’s campaign did exactly this to the NYC political machine.

He didn’t create a new party from scratch. He copied the existing “source code” of the city’s electorate—their desires for affordable housing, reliable services, and a voice—and began building a new, more responsive “software” on top of it. The old machine’s code was proprietary and closed-source; its decisions were opaque. Mamdani’s fork was open-source; its development was public, its features (policies) were shaped by user (voter) input, and its roadmap was transparent.

This is the ultimate counter-playbook: Don’t attack the fortress. Replicate its foundation and build a better city next door, then watch as the inhabitants migrate. The old system wasn’t defeated in a head-on battle; it was made obsolete through superior design and user experience.

The Rules of Engagement Have Been Rewritten

The old playbook is obsolete. The new rules are:

• Rule #1: Authenticity Trumps Anointment.

• Rule #2: A Distributed Network Beats a Centralized Treasury.

• Rule #3: The System is a Strategy.

The Liability of the New Foundation

But sovereignty requires vigilance. The same tools that dismantle one gatekeeper can erect another. We must ask:

• Does a politics built on viral engagement inherently favor polarizing figures?

• As power decentralizes from old machines, does it recentralize around new, unaccountable digital platforms?

This is the paradigm shift. We are moving from a politics of institutions to a politics of ecosystems.

The question for every leader, in politics or business, is no longer if their operating system will be forked, but when. The only sustainable strategy is to build a system so transparent, accountable, and aligned with its base that it remains the preferred choice.

There’s a dirty secret in the legal profession: most lawyers aren’t strategists — they are document processors. Too many operate on autopilot; they recycle generic templates, proforma arguments, and regurgitated strategies instead of crafting innovative solutions. Why? Because it’s safe. Billable. Effortless.

The result? Clients are paying for mediocrity instead of justice.

I’ve seen this firsthand, not as a lawyer, but as someone who has had to fight battles where the stakes were personal. What I learned in those fights was revealing: the difference between winning and losing often comes down to one simple choice—whether your lawyer is willing to think beyond their templates.

Kenyan Cases That Exposed the Law

In Kenya, where we do business, this problem is rampant.

1. Nubian Rights Forum v. Attorney General (2020). When activists challenged Kenya’s NIIMS digital ID system, conventional lawyers urged “standard constitutional challenges.” The petitioners ignored them, won a landmark privacy ruling, and proved that bold strategies defeat template thinking.

2. Invented “separate contracts” that didn’t exist

What exactly were they doing, trying to monetize a fixed fee contract into a 3-step bill generator for the same work? My reply:

“All responses to your questions are in the executed contract. I don’t do calls for contractual literacy and I keep records in writing”

The outcome? Full refund. Immediate withdrawal. No theatrics. In other words, play dumb, and they bill you. Think sharp, they bail. Nothing clears a lawyer’s calendar faster than a client who actually reads the law.

✅If they can’t read, they can’t win. Basic diligence is the bare minimum

✔Applying strategy—not regurgitating templates

✔Leveraging courtroom experience, you can’t Google

If they’re just rebranding free resources as “expertise”, you’re being scammed. Because in law, as in life—those who break the mold change the game.
